I don't remember when I first got into the Oscars.

I just remember keeping this mental list of all my favourite directors who should win an Oscar. I adored "Back to the Future" so obviously Robert Zemeckis needed to win one. "Aliens" was legendary - who hasn't played a videogame shooter and hasn't thought to themselves "Short Controlled Bursts"?

But Spielberg was at the top of my list. I wanted him to get one for E.T. , but that damned Attenborough got in the way with that "Ghandhi" flick. (They would later go on to joke about it...Richard Attenborough ended up starring in Jurassic Park as the guy who created the park). Every year I'd watch to see if he were nominated and any year he was nominated, I'd watch to see if he'd win. I made a promise every year that if Steve didn't walk home with an Oscar, I'd never watch the telecast again.

I think I've seen part of every Oscar leading up to the early '90s.

Sometimes, you just know when a movie is Oscar bound. Something about it just says "Yeah, I'm the film to beat." And when I first saw the poster for "Schindler's List" in a subway, I actually stopped and stared at it. I read the credits-like I do with every movie poster- and things jumped out at me. Janucsz Kaminsky (sp?) as a Cinematographer? The name didn't sound familiar, but I couldn't recall Spielberg ever working with before. There was John Williams, as always with the score. Still, something about all of it just seemed really serious. Right there, I thought it had a chance at Best Picture.

And sure enough, it did. I was so happy for him, even though I never saw the film until later on. :)

From that point, a sting of my favs started winning. Gibson for "Braveheart", Zemeckis for "Forrest Gump" (which stole it from Shawshank), Eastwood for "Unforgiven", Cameron for "Titanic" (even though L.A. Confidential may have been the better film overall). Last year, one of the last two remaining directors was scratched off the list when Marty won for "The Departed".

Last night, my list was completed. I've wanted the Coens to win ever since "Miller's Crossing" and anyone who knows me has an idea of how I feel about "The Big Lebowski". Their win was really long overdue. :)

Done with the concert, but in so much pain. Moshing to the point of fighting. Must remember to not stand so close. Had fun though. May be caught on camera.
