Cavatica's Vox

Here's the review I submitted to iTunes: This album is a mixture of some of Elfman's genres. I haven't purchased an Elfman score since the first Spiderman (I have Batman, Edward Scissorhands, and a few others). It has a lot of the intensity from the Spiderman scores. For me, it works as great background music for writing. If the music has any problem is that it's a little hard to tie the scenes that they belong to together. The standouts for me are “Exterminator Beat”, “Fox’s Decision”, “Welcome to the Fraternity” and “Scheme” . On this, there is a motif that keeps coming up, and it seems like it could have been varied a bit more than it was, but it doesn’t come across as annoying. I understand if the producers couldn’t get their hands on “Everyday is Exactly the Same” by Nine Inch Nails. It would have been a nice addition to the album, but maybe that’s a good thing, because “With Teeth” (the album that song is on), is worth listening to as well. ☺ And then there’s “The Little Things”. When I heard this in the movie, I waited through the credits to find out who did it. Sure enough, it was Elfman. He must have been looking through an old Oingo Boingo scrapbook when he thought this up. It’s good to see him in front of the mic again (since singing Jack Skellington, I think). Easily the best song on the album. It looks like the record companies know that most “Soundtracks” these days are made up of a number of popular tunes put together, so they held off on making “The Little Things” downloadable on online retail sites without getting the whole album. That’s messed up, considering that not everyone may be into scores. Still, I’m just happy they thought of adding the song to begin with (and not have the soundtrack be as anemic as Batman Begins was - something Hans Zimmer is known for). Overall, I like it.

I absolutely adore this album. Very, very weird. Everytime I hear it, I can't help but smile. A lot of it is indie folk music that's just about Life and love. Sweet stuff.
